Teachers & Writers Magazine is joining our friends at Detroit’s InsideOut Literary Arts Project in celebrating the organization’s twentieth birthday by publishing excerpts from To Light a Fire: 20 Years with the InsideOut Literary Arts Project. This month, we are pleased to feature Nandi Comer’s essay, “Dangerous Acts.

Comer received a joint MFA/MA in poetry and African American and African diaspora studies at Indiana University. She has received fellowships from the Virginia Center for the Arts, Cave Canem, and Callaloo. Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in A Detroit Anthology (Rust Belt Chic Press, 2014), Another and Another: An Anthology from the Grind Daily Writing Series (Bull City Press, 2012), Cave Canem Anthology XII (Willow Books, 2012), Callaloo, Crab Orchard Review, Spoon River Poetry Review, Sycamore Review, and Third Coast.
