To help our friends and colleagues at iO celebrate their twenty years of literary arts programs for young people, T&W has been publishing excerpts from To Light a Fire. This month, we are featuring Francine J. Harris’ essay, “Mess Making.”

Harris’ first collection of poems, allegiance (Wayne State University Press, 2012) was a finalist for the 2013 Kate Tufts Discovery and PEN Open Book Award. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Poetry, Boston Review, Rattle, Ninth Letter, and Ploughshares, among others. Originally from Detroit, Harris is a Cave Canem fellow and a member of the creative writing faculty at Interlochen Center for the Arts.

Teachers & Writers Magazine is published by Teachers & Writers Collaborative as a resource for teaching the art of writing to people of all ages. The online magazine presents a wide range of ideas and approaches, as well as lively explorations of T&W’s mission to celebrate the imagination and create greater equity in and through the literary arts.
